There are several distinct periods in the long history of the University Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital “Maichin Dom”*:

1. Opening and organizing the hospital and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology - 1893 (1920) -1925.

2. Establishing “Maichin Dom” school of Obstetrics and Gynecology - 1925 -1944.

3. The hospital after the Second World War - 1944 -1976.

4. The new “Maichin Dom” as a part of the Medical Academy in Sofia (1976 - 1993).

5. University Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital “Maichin Dom” in the period of social and economic changes.

The idea of establishing a specialized hospital in obstetrics and gynecology belonged to Princess Maria Luisa, who in 1883 decided to fund its building. The construction began in 1896. The official opening ceremony of the first specialized hospital in obstetrics and gynecology “Maichin Dom “Princess Maria Luisa” was on November 19th, 1903. The ceremony was attended by Tzar Ferdinand, members of Parliament, diplomats, cabinet ministers, clergymen and citizens of Sofia.
